Newtownforbes is a village in County Longford, Ireland. Located along the N4 Dublin-Sligo national road, approximately 6km northwest of Longford Town, it was originally known as Lisbrack – (an Lios Breac – “the speckled fort”) – until the name was changed around 1750 by the Forbes family. Also known as the Earls of Granard, they had been granted lands in the area by King James I in 1620. Their ancestral home, Castle Forbes, is one of the few seats in Ireland where the descendants of its founder still reside.
